Preventing falls
Prevention is better than a cure!
Every year, approximately 30% of persons over the age of 65 fall. The fall is a multifactorial event that can be associated with the characteristics of the individual, their behaviors or their environment.
Available services
In Abitibi-Témiscamingue, a falls prevention program (known as PIED – Programme intégré d'équilibre dynamique) is offered in every MRC of the territory.
This free program is intended for persons aged 65 or older who have fallen over the past year or who are concerned with their balance or the risk of falling.
- Length: twelve consecutive weeks (two meetings a week).
- Personal evaluation at the beginning and at the end of the session.
- Facilitated by recognized trained health care professionals.
- Content: group exercises, at home exercise routine, discussions and information on various themes: safe behaviours, home layout, etc.
